It’s All in the Prep.
Another way of saying this is, It’s all in the Set Up.
Mark Russell of Natural Dressage was sharing with me the secret of how to teach someone and their horse how to successfully experience a smooth and natural feeling Right Lead Canter Departure.
He first spoke of all the ways riders get in the way of learning this move, freely and pleasurably.
1/. They keep telling the story of how it hasn’t worked for them in the past.
2/. They keep telling the story of their horses painful past and how that keeps getting in the way
3/. They keep telling the story of how they keep getting in the horses way
I asked him how he gets past all this.
His answer was simply profound.
He said, I listen to them while setting them up for success.
I put them and their horse, while they are telling their tales, in position so that a right lead canter departure is the next natural outcome of proper position and preparation.
It’s all in the prep.
Mark went on to say, I first ask if they want to feel the feeling of a successful departure. While they are imagining the feelings and feeling good about, I set it up so the horse would feel good about it also.
Then I let nature do its job and follow the preparation to its natural outcome.
Once they and their horse together have felt the good feeling thought of success then we can recreate the same situation without resistance over and over till it becomes natural to them both.
The Prep, is all the little things you can do to set up success for yourself. The most successful people in all areas of endeavors are successful because they have successful habits.
They have prepared and keep preparing by creating habits, rituals, and rhythms in their lives that guarantee success. And when a habit no longer serves then, they get right to the preparation of a set up that will work next….!
Just like any good paint job, everyone knows its not in the painting but rather the prep that will make the job come out right. The preparation, well done, makes success a foregone conclusion. In other words, it will come out right and the process will be a pleasure.
